In 1995, more than 8,000 Bosnian Muslims, mainly men and boys, were killed in and around the town of Srebrenica by units of the Army of Republika Srpska under the command of General Ratko Mladić. The mass murder is considered an act of genocide and was described by the Secretary-General of the United Nations as the worst crime on European soil since the Second World War.
